Fox Sports and NextVR have inked a five-year deal to bring virtual reality to more sporting events.
Last month, the two companies to broadcast January 23rd's Premier Boxing Champions matches in virtual reality to , and now they're setting their proverbial sights on this weekend's Daytona 500.
The Nascar event will allow Gear VR owners (with a compatible Galaxy phone, of course) to watch the race from one of four virtual reality cameras, set up in the stands, in the pit, and two other locations. It's unclear whether NextVR plans to release its app to other platforms — a -compatible version would be nice — but the company's deal with Samsung is more about technology alignment than any business exclusivity.
NextVR's portal has been well used over the past few months, broadcasting the first NBA game in virtual reality, along with . The Laguna Beach, California-based startup raised a $30.5 million Series A last November from players in the live sports space, including Time Warner Investments and Comcast Ventures.
