KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicts that the fingerprint sensor will be integrated into the display. Kuo is best known for his predictions about Apple products but he does have a sound understanding of the Asian electronics supply chain.
The optical fingerprint sensor would enable users to unlock their device by placing their finger on part of the display. This functionality was but Samsung decided against it.
It means that the handset will have an optical fingerprint sensor that was first rumored for the Galaxy S8. Samsung didn’t include it in the Galaxy S8 because the technology wasn’t quite ready.
He further adds that there are three companies that are trying to win the contract from Samsung to supply the part that would power the optical fingerprint sensor. Korea-based Samsung LSI and BeyondEyes have reportedly shipped samples to Samsung already.
