Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for May 8th, 2020. Today was basically a nightmare scenario for me, friends. There were a ton of new sales, as is often the case on Fridays. But there were also a lot of new releases that weren’t on the schedule yesterday, leaving us with a list of new releases just as big as yesterday’s. I started writing today at about lunchtime, and as I’m putting the finishing touches on this article, the sun has set. Yikes. Let’s get to business!

New Releases

Fury Unleashed ($19.99)

furyunleashed1.jpg

SwitchArcade Highlight!

Uh yeah, this is really awesome. Basically it’s a big tablespoon of Dead Cells with a healthy sprinkling of Contra or Metal Slug, and if that doesn’t already have you salivating, I don’t know what to say. You’re exploring the pages of a comic book, and each room is a panel. It’s a run-and-gun style game with roguelite elements where you unlock permanent upgrades as you go. It looks good, plays well, and even has support for local co-op. If you enjoy challenging roguelite action games, you’ll likely go ga-ga for Fury Unleashed.

Dark Burial ($3.99)

darkburial.jpg

This is an action platformer where your character wields a crossbow. Shoot down monsters and jump over dangerous hazards as you make your way through 18 levels. Every so often you’ll have to take on a boss battle. I suppose if nothing else this is the cheapest game you can pick up today, but there’s not a whole lot to say in the game’s favor beyond that. I guess the dark visuals look kind of cool and atmospheric? That’s all I’ve got.

Stone ($14.99)

stone.jpg

This game pitches itself as an Aussie stoner noire story game, and yeah, that seems as good a way to describe it as any. Basically an adventure game, Stone sees you following a hungover koala as he tries to piece together what the heck happened. It’s about two hours long, and it’s probably best to approach it as an interactive movie of sorts. There’s an entertaining plot here, but not much game. It’s also weird as heck, which is going to endear the game to some and repel others. If you’re looking for something different in today’s list, this is likely as odd as you’re going to get.

Gravity Rider Zero ($6.99)

gravityriderzero.jpg

This is a port of a free-to-play mobile physics-based bike game. It has an interesting futuristic setting, but beyond that it’s a rather bland take on the whole Excitebike concept. You know how this sort of thing goes. Drive through the tracks, accelerate and brake judiciously, level your bike out when landing from a jump, and so on. There are some gimmicks that appear as you move from planet to planet, and lots of bikes, upgrades, and paint jobs to mess around with. Well, at least it’s not too expensive.

Megabyte Punch ($19.99)

megabytepunch.jpg

Robot customization meets Subspace Emissary meets… well, I guess ‘Subspace Emissary’ implies it, but Super Smash Bros. It sounds awesome, but it’s really just kind of okay. Given that the real Super Smash Bros. is available to Switch owners, I’m not sure how much appeal this game holds. Up to four players can join in, but there’s no online mode so you’ll need some people in the immediate vicinity. It’s enjoyable enough that if you like the customization aspects you’ll probably be satisfied with it. Extra modes give this one a bit more legs but ultimately I was kind of bored with it. At least this Switch version includes some extra stages and Amiibo support?

Reed 2 ($4.99)

reed2.jpg

Reed is a decent little platformer, and its sequel delivers more of the same but harder. Collection information cubes as you jump and run through 52 tricky levels en route to reaching the Developer in order to deliver vital backup files. The presentation is oddly bleak and oppressive, which is an interesting take on the usual cheerful pixel platformer visuals. Nothing to go running down the street shouting about, but it’s a solid enough hop-and-bop experience for a reasonable price.

Jet Ski Rush ($3.99)

jetskirush.jpg

Dang, where’s Eli’s Behind-the-Back-Auto-Runner review template when I need it? This game, which I’m guessing is a mobile port, sees you riding on a jet ski on an endless lane-based course. I’m sure it’s to no one’s surprise that you will be picking up coins and using power-ups that do all of the usual lane-based runner things. After spending nearly seven years at TouchArcade, I really can’t muster up even the slightest bit of excitement over a game like this, particularly one so bereft of Spider-Mans.

SuperMash ($19.99)

supermash.jpg

There are some ideas that are so clever that I want nothing more than for the resulting game to be good. I, uh, wish that had panned out for SuperMash. Unfortunately, it’s a bit of a mess. The gimmick here is that you have six different game genres that you’ll mash together in pairs to create bizarre hybrid levels. None of the results are all that fun to play, feeling more like broken mini-games than anything else. It looks nice and the audio won’t send you home crying either, but all of that is for naught if the game’s mechanics can’t hold up their end of things.

Feathery Ears ($9.99)

featheryears.jpg

This is a short but decent enough 3D platformer from the developer of Wings of Glass about a character with, well, feathery ears. The controls are pretty good and it’s enjoyable to play, but it ends just a bit too quickly. Levels have a few different patterns, and some of them are better than others. It surprisingly has an interesting story to tell, though it’s incredibly vague, which some may not like. I really like the art style in Feathery Ears. It has a bizarre abstract quality that reminds me in some ways of games like NiGHTS Into Dreams. I’d be more likely to recommend it if the level designs were a bit better, but if you dig 3D platformers you may find this a good buy anyway.

Bomb ($9.99)

bomb.jpg

This is a cheap, shoddy clone of Bomberman without even the slightest attempt to put any spin on the idea. Battles appear to be one-on-one, and the game’s description and the eShop data seem to disagree about whether or not there’s a multiplayer option. The price is an absolute joke given how limited this appears to be. Buy the proper Bomberman game, buy a interesting variant like Invisigun or Mad Age & This Guy, just don’t buy this awful trash. Yes, it’s a Sabec.

Task Force Kampas ($5.99)

taskforcekampas.jpg

If you’re looking for a new shoot-em-up today and don’t have a lot of money to spend, you may want to check out Task Force Kampas. This is a vertical shoot-em-up with randomized stages and endless runs, with its main gimmick being that you can repair your ship by holding your fire for a bit. There are some unlockables to aim for, as well. It’s nothing too grand and chances are good that you have plenty of shoot-em-ups in your backlog already, but I think it’s an amusing enough time for the price it’s asking.

Arcade Archives MagMax ($7.99)

arcadearchivesmagmax.jpg

Before it discovered the easy money that was strip mahjong games, Japanese developer Nichibutsu seemed to be very interested in the concept of shooting games where the player constructs an ever-bigger ship by collecting power-ups. It worked well in vertical shooter Terra Cresta, but I’m not sure I’d say the same about 1985’s MagMax. It’s a horizontal shooter where you start off as a little ship but eventually become a giant robot. This is less than optimal in a shooter because it makes your hit box bigger, but I will admit there is some basic glee in putting together your bot. Not something I’d be that interested in revisiting, but if you have good memories of the game, Hamster has treated it well here.

Greedroid ($12.00)

greedroid.jpg

This is kind of a roguelite dungeon romp where you control a robot named IB. She can lift and throw blocks, and you need to use her skills to defeat enemies and get to the exit on each floor. The graphics use a voxel-like style that frankly doesn’t do anything for me, but may appeal more to you. It feels a bit expensive for what you get here, especially given how many low-cost roguelites are available on the Switch. It’s a fairly ordinary Mystery Dungeon-style game in most respects, so if you don’t mind the price I suppose you could do worse.

Our Two Bedroom Story ($24.99)

ourtwobedroomstory.jpg

Another visual novel game aimed at those who enjoy hunky dudes, Our Two Bedroom Story sees you taking a job at a publishing house and, through a wacky series of events, sharing a home with one of your handsome co-workers. Uh-oh! Now you’re going to have to deal with awkward stuff like catching them as they come out of the shower, sharing breakfast together, and so on. With five different guys to choose from, you should be able to find one that appeals to you. Oddly, one of the extra chapters has not been translated and remains 100% in Japanese. Well, I guess that happens. Extremely average as this sort of thing goes, but it’ll scratch the itch if you’ve got one.

80’s Overdrive ($9.99)

80soverdrive.jpg

This Out Run-like throwback to the decade we just can’t seem to let go of certainly has a good sense of style to it. It’s quite difficult, probably more so than the other obvious competitors in this category on the Switch. You get two game modes, a track editor, six cars, lots of great synth tunes, and an impressive amount of visual variety. Not bad, and likely of some interest to those who love games like Horizon Chase or SEGA AGES Out Run. I don’t think it’s better than either of those, but there’s plenty of room in the pool.

Gates of Hell ($5.99)

gatesofhell.jpg

Gates of Hell is an arena-based FPS action game where you battle demonic enemies using an assortment of angelic and demonic weapons. Considering the genre and theme, I can’t really imagine why anyone would pick this up over one of the DOOM games. Like… any of them. And more than half of those are hovering around the same price point as this game. I suppose if you’ve exhausted every other avenue for slaughtering minions of hell from a first-person viewpoint, this one is only six dollars.

Sales

(North American eShop, US Prices)

So many sales, so little worth noting. Saints Row IV: Re-Elected is on sale and is worth grabbing if you’re into the silliness. Root Letter and Raging Loop are good visual novels, though you can certainly find them cheaper on other platforms. Children of Zodiarcs is pretty nifty? Well, have a look yourself. The outbox doesn’t have too much in it to worry about, but you might as well check that list too.
