Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for October 4th, 2019. Another week comes to a close as we march into one of the busiest seasons of the year. In today’s article, we get right to the new releases. There are plenty to look at, and a few of them are quite cool. Today’s sales are also full of great choices, which means you’ve got a lot of ways to spend your money today if you’re that-way inclined. Let’s get to it!

New Releases

Ghostbusters: The Video Game Remastered ($29.99)

SwitchArcade Highlight!

I always hear people saying they want Ghostbusters 3. Where is Ghostbusters 3? Why don’t they make Ghostbusters 3? Well friends, they already did make Ghostbusters 3, if you ask me. It’s the 2009 Ghostbusters video game. They got all of the main cast, plus some of the side characters, to not only lend their likenesses but also their voices to the game. Literally the last piece of entertainment where you could get Harold Ramis and Bill Murray in the same place! No, the story isn’t that great, but it’s original, full of amazing fanservice, and it’s at least as good as Ghostbusters 2. And not only has it not been lost to the licensing sinkhole, it’s got a nice remaster that you can play on the go! Just a great game for any fan of the movies.

CrossNiq+ ($7.99)

crossniqplus.jpg

SwitchArcade Highlight!

CrossNiq+ is a neat little puzzle game where you need to shift tiles in order to make crosses. Various obstacles and gimmick tiles get in your way as you get further in, so it gets pretty hot in a hurry. There’s an Endless mode, a Time Attack, a local multiplayer Versus mode, and the pleasing Chillout mode where you just make crosses without any limitations or stressors. Throw in plenty of unlockables, and you have a nice way to while away the hours.

One Night Stand ($4.99)

onenightstand.jpg

SwitchArcade Highlight!

I talk a lot about how weird it is to match Nintendo’s once squeaky-clean image to its current laissez-faire attitude towards curation, and I’ll mention it here again. This is a visual novel that serves, more or less, as a simulation of waking up after a drunken one-night stand. You wake up beside a woman you don’t know or remember, but you definitely slept with her. Whenever she leaves the room, you have a chance to look around and try to gather some information that you can then use to ask the woman questions when she returns. There are 12 different endings based on your choices and behavior, with some of them pretty bad and perhaps one very good. Really neat game so long as you’re down with the genre, and easily worth a fiver.

Rimelands: Hammer of Thor ($9.99)

rimelandshammerofthor.jpg

SwitchArcade Highlight!

Aw yes, I love Rimelands. I was so sad when this game slid into the abyss of incompatibility on iOS, so seeing it here on Switch is wonderful. It’s a very unique turn-based RPG that draws heavily from role-playing board games like Warhammer Quest. You play as a treasure hunter in a world that is so far past apocalyptic that civilization has more or less picked itself up again. The story doesn’t really do a whole lot, but the gameplay is really fun and intuitive. It’s not a very long game though, so keep that in mind if you need your ten dollars to stretch as far as possible. You’re looking at around ten hours to finish the whole thing. Still worth it, I’d say.

Community Inc ($14.99)

communityinc.jpg

Well, it’s a community building-type game. Make a little town, trade with other towns, try to keep the little animals that work in your town happy, and so on. As usual, I searched to see what the buzz was on this game when it released on other platforms, and it’s not good. Perhaps this Switch version is improved. Perhaps the updates made after those reviews fixed the problems. I can’t say for sure. Personally, I’d save my money and buy one of the Dragon Quest Builders games instead, but if you’re a brave soul you might be willing to take a leap of faith on this one. To be fair, most of the complaints seem to be connected to the game launching in an unfinished state, and I’d sincerely hope that’s not the case with the Switch version.

The Tiny Bang Story ($9.99)

thetinybangstory.jpg

I’ve talked to people who have loved the heck out of The Tiny Bang Story, but I just couldn’t get into it myself. It’s kind of a hidden object game, but also kind of a regular point-and-click game. While the game isn’t very long at all, it is quite gorgeous thanks to its strong art style, and there’s a certain mellowness to its gameplay that I suspect is the key to really enjoying it. Basically, an asteroid has shattered the world, and you need to collect all of the pieces to put it back together. You get those pieces by solving puzzles. It’s fine enough, I suppose. It’s probably worth mentioning that you can also get the game on your iOS device for a slightly lower price and it loses nothing by being a touch-screen experience.

Teddy Gangs ($9.99)

teddygangs.jpg

Well, it’s another cheap-looking game from Sabec. Would that the prices matched how crummy these games look. Unfortunately, you’ll be paying ten whole dollars here for the privilege of playing a janky, shallow beat-em-up with awful visuals. I have no idea who the market is for this dross, but if it’s you, I guess you can come and pick up your boy.

Beats Runner ($6.99)

beatsrunner.jpg

Hmmm, well. I mean, it’s an auto-runner. Stage-based one, by the looks of it. There are 20 levels in total, and it seems like it’s hinting at more but since the description is just copied and pasted from its free mobile version, I have my doubts. Best to go into this just expecting 20 levels, and with that in mind, it’s a tough one to recommend. There’s nothing really special about it other than it containing a few borderline copyright infringements in its unlockables, and I’m not even sure that’s special at all given its origins as a free-to-play D-tier mobile release. I think you all know what I mean when I say this by now, but… do what you must.

Arcade Archives Karate Champ ($7.99)

arcadearchiveskaratechamp.jpg

Younger readers may not appreciate just how much of a game-changer Capcom’s Street Fighter 2 was for the one-on-one fighting genre. If you want a history lesson, or just want a reminder of days you’ve long forgotten, Data East’s 1984 classic Karate Champ is now part of the Arcade Archives. It’s a little rough to play today and indeed has been ever since Street Fighter 2 came out, but for its time it was an absolute revolution. Use sixteen different karate moves to try to win the championship, and enjoy a little extra training by wrestling bulls on the beach. Hamster has done its usual fine work, even if this former champ hasn’t been in fighting condition for a long time.

Sales

Thankfully, today’s list isn’t as gargantuan as it sometimes can be on Fridays. It is a rather good one, though. Chasm is on sale to celebrate its extensive new update, and is definitely worth checking out if you like Metroidvania games. Anodyne is an absolute steal at its discounted price, and if you haven’t played it you really should check it out. 17-Bit’s titles aren’t often on sale and both GALAK-Z and Skulls of the Shogun are worth considering. As for the outbox, that anniversary sale on Cuphead will be expiring on Sunday. Pick it up if you want it, as it may not be on sale again for a while.
