Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for October 14th, 2020. In today’s article, we’ve got a bit of news to go over. Mostly related to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, but not entirely. We’ve also got summaries of a few new releases that hit the eShop today, including Cook, Serve, Delicious! 3?! and Vigil: The Longest Night. We finish things up with the latest sales and a look at the outgoing discounts, as per usual. If you somehow don’t have Celeste yet, it’s only a fiver at the moment. Wow! Let’s get to the rest of the business of the day!

‘Minecraft’ Characters Join ‘Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’ Today

supersmashbrosultimateversion9.jpg

It’s been a while since the last new character joined Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, but today is the day that the roster gets its next boost. Steve, Alex, Zombie, and Enderman from Minecraft are now officially available in the game as DLC or through the Fighters Pass 2. There are also new Mii Fighter costumes available as DLC drawing from Minecraft, No More Heroes, The Tower of Druaga, and Bomberman. Go ahead and update your game to version 9.0.0 to get yourself up to speed.

The Latest ‘Super Smash Bros.’ Event is All Ears

Along with the big update and new content drop, the next weekend event for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was also announced. It’s another Spirit Board event, this time focusing on characters with big ears. Spirits fitting the theme will be featured, and defeating them will earn you more snacks than usual. The event kicks off this Friday, October 16th, and will run for three days through the weekend as always.

‘Axiom Verge 2’ Delayed to First Half of 2021

axiomverge2.jpg

Axiom Verge is an awesome Metroid-like game, one of my very favorites that can be bought on the Switch. I was super-happy to see the sequel announced last year, like many people were. At the time the game was announced for a Fall 2020 release date, but the developer has just announced that the game has been delayed and will instead release in the first half of next year. There are a lot of reasons for that, but hey, if the game’s not ready yet then it’s not ready. I’m more than willing to wait a little longer to see what is waiting for us in Axiom Verge 2.

New Releases

Cook, Serve, Delicious! 3?! ($19.99)

SwitchArcade Highlight!

Well, thanks to Mikhail’s excellent review in yesterday’s article, I don’t need to say too much here. It’s the third game in this popular cooking series, and while the second game decided to just give you a double helping of the same meal, this one tries to change the recipe a bit. Fortunately it all works well enough, which should help this game appeal to both those who enjoyed the previous games and newcomers alike. That interrobang in the title haunts me, though. Are we not sure if the food is delicious or not? Is this a surprising outcome? Were we not expecting a delicious result? Playing the game raises more questions than answers for fools like me.

Dadish ($10.00)

dadish.jpg

While other platforms offer a plethora of “sad dad" games, the Switch can now say it has a “rad dad" game. And that rad is short for ‘radish’, friends. Play as a papa radish whose kids have gone missing from the garden in this cute little 2D platformer from the creator of Super Fowlst. There are fifty levels to play through, with five big bosses to take down. Naturally, there are secrets to be discovered by those go poking around off the beaten path. I could have done a pun there with ‘beet’ but I didn’t, and I hope you appreciate that. Anyway, this is a well-made platformer that plays things more or less by the book in terms of mechanics. If that’s what you’re hungry for today, eat up.

Vigil: The Longest Night ($21.99)

vigilthelongestnight.jpg

What do you get when you infuse the Metroidvania genre with the design sensibilities of Soulsborne games? Quite a few games, actually. But today it gets you Vigil: The Longest Night, a game that feels like a slightly more platformy Salt and Sanctuary in a lot of ways. As near as I can gather, it’s a solid enough game. The map is a bit troublesome and you need to be very mindful of points of no return as the game doesn’t telegraph them well, but the core action and overall level design works like it should.

Sales

(North American eShop, US Prices)

I already said it in the intro paragraph, but if you somehow haven’t bought Celeste yet, that’s the clear star of today’s line-up. Towerfall for five bucks is also a pretty safe pick-up. The Robotics;Notes games have a decent launch discount going, and Overwatch has its big sale connected to the free trial active now. As for the outbox… I don’t have much to say about it, to be honest. Some okay games in there, but I’ll leave it to you to figure out which ones are your thing.

Looking forward to writing about all of those. Well, that’s the biz. We’ll also have the new sales, and probably nothing else because that is already a several-hour long job. I hope you all have a wild Wednesday, and as always, thanks for reading!
