Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for October 6th, 2020. In today’s article, we’ve got a little slice of news about an upcoming EA release. We’ve also got summaries for each of today’s six new releases including titles like Nickelodeon Kart Racers 2: Grand Prix and 9th Dawn III. We finish things up by taking a look at the incoming and outgoing sales, with a lot more of the latter than the former today. Let’s get back to the action!

‘Need for Speed Hot Pursuit Remastered’ Revs Up on November 13th

This has been one of the worst-kept secrets in Switch ports this year, but it’s finally been confirmed that Need for Speed Hot Pursuit Remastered will be coming to the Nintendo Switch. It’s trailing behind the other consoles a few days, but will arrive on November 13th for $39.99. It features cross-platform multiplayer for up to eight players online, all of the DLC plus additional updates, and enhanced visuals. Naturally, that’s all on top of the already-excellent original game from 2010. This will be the first time Nintendo platforms get access to the full-fat version of the game, with a rather poor Wii port being its only appearance prior to this.

New Releases

9th Dawn III ($15.99)

9thdawniii.jpg

SwitchArcade Highlight!

If you’ve played any of the 9th Dawn games on mobile before, you probably don’t need me to tell you much. This is the latest in the line, and it has lots of new stuff to discover and quests to complete. If you don’t know about this series, basically imagine a top-down sprite-based Elder Scrolls game and you won’t be far off the mark. In truth, it’s more Ultima-inspired than anything, but I get too many blank stares when I make that reference these days. There’s a new card game in here, adding yet another thing to do. While the Switch has a ton of RPGs, it doesn’t have anything else quite like this. I’ll have a review of it soon.

Nickelodeon Kart Racers 2: Grand Prix ($39.99)

nickelodeonkartracers2grandprix.jpg

SwitchArcade Highlight!

The first Nickelodeon Kart Racers wasn’t a bad stab at the genre, but it sure didn’t have much on Mario Kart. I also found that the roster of characters was disappointingly slim given the brand it was working with. Only four IPs and twelve total characters? Talk about not pressing your main advantage. Well, the sequel goes a lot bigger. There are 30 playable racers and 70 team members, with all four IPs (SpongeBob, TMNT, Hey Arnold!, and Rugrats) returning from the original joined by a bunch more including Ren & Stimpy, CatDog, The Loud House, Danny Phantom, Avatar, Korra, Invader Zim, and Rocko’s Modern Life. Also JoJo Siwa, for some reason? Alright. There are more tracks, a new online multiplayer mode, an improved racing engine, and more improvements and additions. I’m sure it’s still not as good as Mario Kart, but it’s probably a lot closer to what you might have been hoping for from the first game.

Charterstone: Digital Edition ($24.99)

charterstonedigitaledition.jpg

It’s another digital version of a board game, this time of Jamey Stegmaier’s Charterstone. It’s of the “worker placement" type, vaguely similar to games like Agricola and Stone Age. You can play solo against AI opponents, or challenge other humans in local and online multiplayer. Thankfully, the online multiplayer is cross-platform, which should make it easier to get games going. The consensus on this based on its releases on other platforms seems to be that it’s a decent version of a decent game, but the overall vibe is neither super-enthusiastic nor overly negative. If you’re looking for a new digital board game of this sort and are willing to accept that they can’t all be Agricola, this may serve you well.

Agatha Christie – The ABC Murders ($29.99)

agathachristietheabcmurders.jpg

This is a point-and-click adventure based on legendary author Agatha Christie’s murder mystery book of the same title. You play as the famous Hercule Poirot and need to get to the bottom of a series of murders committed by a killer known only by the name ABC. The story is the strong point here, obviously, while the rest of the game is just kind of okay by the standards of the genre. I think if you’re a big fan of Christie and Poirot, you’ll get what you’re looking for from this game. Otherwise, it’s a bit on the expensive side for what is, in truth, a middling example of an adventure game.

From Orbit ($9.99)

fromorbit.jpg

This is an RTS of sorts with some tower defense and roguelite bits to it. The idea is that you land on a planet, which is procedurally generated, gather up as many resources as you can, then get the heck out of Dodge before the local fauna make a lunch of you. Not a bad concept but it suffers from the same problem a lot of games with procedurally-generated parts do: the pool isn’t deep enough, so instead of feeling like you’re visiting an infinite number of places, they all just kind of run together. There aren’t enough upgrades and options to keep things spicy for long, either. I do like the art style, though. Very cute.

Foregone ($29.99)

foregone.jpg

Wow, a side-scrolling action game that is neither roguelite nor Metroidvania? You’re brave souls, Big Blue Bubble. This is a challenging action-platformer with linear progression where dying costs you some of your resources that you would otherwise use for upgrades. So yes, there are some RPG bits in here. In fact, there’s a fair bit of loot to collect that you’ll need to use to survive. Seriously, this game gets pretty tough. I love the hand-crafted stages, which feel like a rarity in games with this vibe. Most of my experience with the game was when it was in early access, where balance was a major issue. Hopefully those problems are resolved with this Switch port.

Sales

(North American eShop, US Prices)

The list of new sales isn’t the longest today, but there are a few points of interest in it. Spinch is on sale for the first time since it launched a little while ago, and the rather enjoyable Sparklite has been discounted yet again. Some interesting indies in there, so do take a leisurely look. The outbox is huge by comparison, mostly due to the Tokyo Game Show sales coming to an end. While I suspect most of the games will be on sale again within a few months, for the time being this is your last chance to get some great prices on games from NIS America, Inti Creates, CFK, and more.

That’s all that’s good for today, friends. We’ll be back tomorrow with some news and some fresh sales, along with summaries of the couple of new games hitting the eShop. I’m using most of my free time today to play with my new toy, the Game Gear Micro. It is unbelievably small, and that fascinates me to no end. Whatever you’re playing, I hope you have a good Tuesday and, as always, thanks for reading!
