Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for December 26th, 2019. I hope you all had a nice holiday yesterday. Unless it wasn’t a holiday for you, in which case I hope you had a passable Wednesday. I took a whole day off and I am now deeply regretting it. A ton of new games came out in the last couple of days, and if that wasn’t bad enough, there were a bunch of new sales as well. Even curated, this list is wild. Oh well, it’s done now. Let’s get straight to it!

New Releases

Pulstario ($0.99)

pulstario.jpg

SwitchArcade Highlight!

From the same person that made the ultra-tough platformers kuso and LOVE comes Pulstario, a different kind of game that is just as hard if not more so. You control a little ship and need to collect all of the little while dots in each stage. I guess they’re souls? Anyway, you can point in a direction and hit the button to thrust, and if you hit anything, you’ll explode. You keep any souls you collect and respawn right away, though, so it’s easy to pick up and get going again. As the game progresses, the passages get tighter and more moving parts are introduced, requiring even greater precision. For a whole buck, this is a steal.

Roombo: First Blood ($4.99)

roombofirstblood.jpg

SwitchArcade Highlight!

Yeah, this is neat. Basically, imagine Home Alone but Kevin is a carpet-cleaning robot and his traps actually have the effect they should have on the robbers. You play as the titular robot and have to make use of a variety of traps to protect your house from would-be thieves. And yes, those traps are lethal. Like… gratuitously so. It’s not a very long or substantial game, but it’s quite fun. Oh, and don’t forget to clean up after yourself. Hard for the family to enjoy their Christmas if there’s too much blood on the carpet, after all.

XenoRaptor ($14.99)

xenoraptor.jpg

SwitchArcade Highlight!

It’s a twin-stick shoot-em-up where you salvage parts from your fallen enemies to upgrade your cyberdragon. Yeah, you control a cyberdragon. No big deal. A second player can join in for some local co-op if that’s your preference. I really like how this one looks and plays, but do be aware that you can get it a lot cheaper on PC right now thanks to holiday sales. There’s a ton of competition in this genre on the Switch, so I wouldn’t blame anyone that wants to pass on adding another to the pile, but this is certainly one of the good ones. It has a nice Geometry Wars vibe to it. Also: cyberdragons. Come on!

Straimium Immortaly ($11.99)

straimiumimmortaly.jpg

SwitchArcade Highlight!

Strange name, cool game. It describes itself as a rogue-lite, shoot-em-up, dungeon crawler. That makes it sound like a million other Switch games, but this one is a bit different. I love the art style, for starters. It’s garish and nasty in all the right ways. There are tons of weapons, lots of neat extra powers, and some wild boss battles. Lots of unlockables, which is something I always like to see. It’s a side-scroller but you have a jetpack to move around with, so you can move quite freely. Provided you aren’t sick to death of this admittedly well-mined concept, you’ll likely have fun with Straimium Immortaly.

Gunma’s Ambition -You and me are Gunma- ($9.99)

gunmasambition.jpg

Uh, so this one probably needs some context. Gunma is a prefecture in Japan, and in terms of its modern importance you could probably consider it like Wyoming or something. No offense to Wyoming intended here, just… Gunma’s not very big, you know? Anyway, in this game you play as Gunma and your goal is to transform all of the other prefectures of Japan into Gunma. It’s kind of an idle game in a sense. You collect stuff, get G-points, and use those to take over other prefectures, changing them into Gunma. The ultimate goal it to turn all of Japan into Gunma. I don’t know. There are also some fun Gunma-related multiplayer party games included here for up to four people to enjoy locally. Sometimes it’s interesting to think that we live in a world where this is localized and sold worldwide but Mother 3 is still off the table. Oh well. Don’t worry, be Gunma.

Akuto: Showdown ($7.99)

akutoshowdown.jpg

This is a colorful arena-based brawler played from an isometric viewpoint. Up to four players can battle it out locally with guns and swords in a variety of interesting areas. There are ten different melee weapons, fifteen different ranged weapons, and a bunch of different arenas with lots of environmental hazards and other gimmicks. If you don’t have any other humans to play with, the AI can pick up the slack. It’s okay with friends but I’m not sure I’d bother with it if you aren’t in a position where you’ve got people coming over to play on a fairly regular basis. And honestly, even in that case, you’ve probably got better things to play.

Roll’d ($1.99)

rolld.jpg

It’s an auto-runner with an interesting twist. You don’t control the runner, but rather the track. So you have to keep the track level as best as possible to avoid anything bad happening to your runner of choice. There are six different stage themes, and thirty different unlockable runners. There’s also apparently a multiplayer mode, but I’m not sure how that would work out. It’s only a couple of bucks, so I suppose if you’re curious you don’t have a whole lot to lose.

Oniken & Odallus Bundle ($19.99)

odallusthedarkcall.jpg

This is a combo pack of two of developer JoyMasher’s releases. All things being equal, it saves you a couple of bucks over buying them separately, which isn’t bad. Odallus is a bit better than Oniken, but I would say both games are acquired tastes. I had to put a good amount of time into both of them before they grew on me, but they did eventually grow on me. This bundle is on sale right now for something like five bucks, which is a really good value if you like your side-scrolling action games.

Tamashii ($11.99)

tamashii.jpg

This is a horror-themed platformer and it is definitely an odd one. You have to explore a temple where an eldritch evil resides, solving puzzles, pulling off tricky platforming, and coping with a genuinely unnerving atmosphere. I’m not sure why the Switch version costs more than double the price of the PC version, but that’s something you’ll probably want to be aware of just in case you don’t mind playing on your computer instead. Be warned: this game gets pretty disturbing, so don’t take it lightly.

8-Ball Pocket ($5.99)

8ballpocket.jpg

If you feel like playing a little eight-ball pool/billiards on your Switch, this is one way to do it. There’s an arcade mode where you try to rise to the top of the online rankings, and a versus mode where you can play against three other players in local multiplayer. The versus mode also allows you to play against AI opponents. There isn’t really much more to add here, so let’s head along to the next game.

Demon Pit ($9.99)

demonpit.jpg

A game that tries to pay homage to the more straightforward action of 1990s FPS, Demon Pit somewhat succeeds in its aims. There are ten different enemy types, seven different weapons, and a nifty soul grapple technique that allows you to zip around the stage. In terms of the actual shooting and movement, it’s clear where its inspirations lie. But the actual structure of the game is that of an arena shooter with endless waves of baddies, which doesn’t feel very 1990s FPS to me. It also has some performance issues, which doesn’t surprise me much as it was a bit of a pig on PC, too.

Barbarous: Tavern of Emyr ($7.99)

barbaroustavernofemyr.jpg

So what you’re essentially looking at here is a medieval fantasy version of Diner Dash, as near as I can tell. You play as a former hero who has spent the last of his gold on a tavern and needs to run it successfully so he can get back on his feet again. Serve the unusual patrons the dishes or equipment that they request before they get mad and leave. You know how this goes. You get sixty different levels set across five different taverns, and there is a local co-op mode for two players. Seems okay for what it is.

Sheep Patrol ($1.99)

sheeppatrol.jpg

You play as a dog and you need to guide sheep through 45 levels in this 3D herding game. Obviously you’ll want to keep as many of the flock as possible from wandering off or getting in trouble. You basically draw a line with your controller and adjust it as necessary to push the sheep towards the goal. You can unlock different dogs, allowing for absurd situations like a dalmatian acting as a shepherding dog. Not very exciting, but it’s certainly colorful and it only costs two bucks. Maybe you are looking for a game about herding sheep? I am not.

Funny Bunny Adventures ($4.99)

funnybunnyadventures.jpg

This is a fairly simple puzzle/action game that consists of stages where you need to plant and harvest crops while various enemies try to catch you. The action gets broken up now and then with some brief mini-games. It has a cute look to it, and it may appeal to younger kids who aren’t looking for much depth in their games. Not sure how much appeal it would have to anyone else, but at the very least it seems competently made. That’s not always something you can take for granted on the eShop these days.

Drawngeon: Dungeons of Ink and Paper ($4.99)

drawngeondungeonsofinkandpaper.jpg

This is kind of a Dungeon Keeper-ish RPG whose main gimmick is its sketchy art style. It certainly has a distinctive look, and that’s a good thing because the rest of the game plays it pretty safe. Don’t expect any interesting puzzles or anything, though. The procedurally-generated dungeons make it so that you’re technically playing something new all the time, but that also means that it all kind of melts into a dungeon-crawling stew after a while. It’s okay. I could definitely think of worse ways to spend five bucks.

The Adventures of Elena Temple: Definitive Edition ($4.99)

theadventuresofelenatempledefinitive.jpg

Hey, it’s Elena Temple, but more of it. You get two new dungeons that add up to 47 new rooms packed with new gameplay elements and traps. You can also unlock some cheat options, switch freely between the different visual styles, and enjoy tweaked versions of the original stages. There are various other little bits that have been changed or added here, and I think it’s safe to say that if you’re going to buy one Elena Temple game on your Switch, this is the one you want. It’s a little harder of a sell if you already own the original game, though.

Goodbye Deponia ($19.99)

Deponia Doomsday ($19.99)

deponiadoomsday.jpg

The third part of the original trilogy and the sequel to that trilogy respectively. Like the other Deponia games that have released on the Switch, these are good ports of some solid point-and-click adventure games that are inexplicably priced higher on this platform than anywhere else. I’m pretty sure with the holiday sales going on, you can grab all of the Deponia games on PC for less than the price of one of these, actually. Over on PS4, you can grab the collection of the first three games a lot cheaper as well. That all said? If you like humorous adventure games in the style of the old Lucasarts classics, I think these are worth the asking price.

2048 Cat ($2.97)

cat2048.jpg

You know, the whole situation around 2048 really irritates me to no end. The only silver lining is that whoever was the first to rip off Threes! with 2048 had their rip-off ripped off by everyone and their shifty uncles. Anyway, 2048 Cat. Or Cat 2048. Not sure which title the publisher prefers here as they seem to use both. It’s 2048, but the tiles look like cartoon cats. That is all there is to it. If you want a 2048 game and like cats, I guess you could buy this.

Sales

Believe it or not, I did curate this list a bit. Not as much as I have with the other mega-drop sales we’ve had recently, but I clipped a lot of junk. Nevertheless, there were still something like 200 new sales worth checking out. That’s bad for me, but maybe good for you if you got some eShop credit as a present. I won’t make any specific recommendations here. You can scroll through and check out the selection all on your own. With little to worry about in the outbox, you can focus entirely on all of these new discounts.

That’s all for today, friends. Hopefully tomorrow won’t be quite as much of a bear. So, what did you all get for Christmas? I got a handful of new games that I will throw on my dragon’s hoard, and a big stuffed Slowpoke that will sit at the head of my bed for the foreseeable future. Also, a tiny Spider-Man that can transform into the letter E. Yeah, I don’t know either. But it’s Spider-Man, so it’s good. I hope you all have a good Thursday, and as always, thanks for reading!
