Google is apparently getting more serious about entering the virtual reality market. A new report, which Google has confirmed, says that Clay Bavor, its vice-president for product management and leader of its apps team, will now be in charge of all of its virtual reality projects. Bavor was also the leader behing .

Over the past year, Bavor, a precocious and well-liked exec inside Google, was spending more time with Cardboard despite his broader responsibilities, several Google people have said. (Though there's no indication that products like Gmail suffered as a consequence.) His move to VR full-time shows that Google is taking the threat from Facebook and others in the space as a credible one.
Facebook is, of course, the parent company behind Oculus, which will launch its Oculus Rift virtual reality headset in March. HTC plans to release its , and Microsoft is working on its own take on the technology with its augmented reality device.
Bavor's duties as the head of Google's app team will be taken by Diane Greene, who was previously announced in November as the under one new division.
