The PlayStation weekly wrap-up

So, a quiet week in gaming. No highly anticipated releases to speak of, really… oh, except for a modest sci-fi game some small UK team has been making… what was it called again?

Yes, it’s a been a week dominated by the mouth-watering possibilities of 18 quintillion planets and a universe commanded into existence by the magic of pure mathematics. While many of you will have spent the week packing your pockets with plutonium and scooting between star systems, we’ve been watching the skies keenly for news from all across the gaming galaxy.

Here are a few things we spotted:

This week’s biggest new trailers

  1. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Game of the Year Edition
Geralt of Rivia gets his very own Game of the Year edition, bringing together the base game, all the additional DLC and the two enormous Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine expansions. With literally hundreds of hours of content, it might just be the biggest RPG to ever appear on console.

  2. No Man’s Sky Launch Trailer
Yes, it’s finally here: the little studio with the big ideas finally launched their highly anticipated sci-fi explore-em-up

  • Finally, British comedian and all round space buff Bill Bailey got to grips with No Man’s Sky’s procedurally-generated universe in typically eccentric and scattershot style in short video from the PlayStation UK team earlier this week.
This week’s PlayStation Store ‘leftfield’ pick:

Here’s one for any grey-haired gamers among you.

seeks inspiration in the age-old ASCII aesthetic for its retro-fabulous look, delivering a satisfying, playful take on the traditional dungeon crawler format. Well worth a look if you’re up for a bit of good old-fashioned hack-and-slash.

The pick of PlayStation Blog:

  • 7 things to do in your first five hours with No Man’s Sky: Our in-house curmudgeon Rhys was lucky enough to jump into No Man’s Sky last week while we were all still busy salivating and was good enough to put together these top tips ahead of the big release (just kidding, Rhys just wants you to believe he’s grumpy).

  • Dead Rising 1, 2, and Off The Record are coming to PS4 next month: The legendary zombie survival franchise from Capcom will be dusting itself off and taking a turn on the PS4 next month.

  • One-of-a-kind fantasy platformer Lichtspeer is coming to PS4 & PS Vita: Take you light-sabre-cum-spear and face off against Elegant Wurst Zombies, Evil Spacedwarfs, Skater Walruses and Mechaturtles – all for the amusement of the gods. If your like your 2D side scrolling with a side of the surreal, Lichtspeer might just be for you.

  • Here’s your first look at Titanfall 2’s single-player campaign: Titanfall built its reputation on placing great multiplayer front and centre. However, for the year’s sequel they’ll be intergrating a full-length single player campaign that looks to be taking a deeper dive into the relationship between Titans and their pilots – colour us intrigued.

Fred: “I snagged subterranean side-scroller

in the PlayStation Store Summer Sale to see if it still stands up after all these years. The odd bit of shonky dialogue notwithstanding, it absolutely does.”

Corey: “Well, I’ve got my copy of No Man’s Sky and now I’m ‘soaring through all the galaxies in search of Earth, flying into the night/fighting evil and tyranny with all my power and with all of my might’. Yes, I am a child of the very late ’70s for those who get that reference.”

Rhys: “No Man’s Sky. No Man’s Sky. No Man’s Sky. No Man’s Sky. It’s everything I wanted it to be and I can’t stop playing. This feels like the start of an obsession that could last a while…”

Matt: “I took this month’s PS Plus offering

for a spin and it’s sucked me in. Imagine, if you will, the kind of naval combat that made Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag’s pirating shenanigans so much fun and then add some moody guitar chops courtesy of Blue Saraceno. Great stuff.”
