Epic Games to pay Apple $73 Million in Legal Fees

Following the end of the main Epic V Apple case earlier this week, Apple has requested the court to order Epic Games to reimburse over $73 million in legal fees.

Apple reports it spent over $82 million defending against the case, with $73 million of this becoming a fee for Epic following calculations that considered the one count Apple lost. Since disputes are still ongoing, the amount Apple is requesting Epic pays is expected to increase before the court's March 2024 "Notice of Motion", which will involve a hearing regarding the fee, "plus additional amounts Apple is incurring during this ongoing litigation, under the indemnification provision of the Developer Program License Agreement".

With the U.S. Supreme Court refusing to review the case further, Apple can continue to enforce its existing App Store policies, including the 30% commission on in-app purchases. Despite this, Apple must also allow developers to steer app users to external payment platforms, thus avoiding the 30% cut.
