If you never had a chance to play Electroplankton on the Nintendo DS, early next month you'll have the opportunity to play a rad-looking iOS game called Songbirds - Playful Music Creation from Pelican 7 which looks like it does a great job of riffing on the formula. Pelican 7 are developers of Lily [], which is another cross between an interactive musical game and a touchscreen toy sort of thing, so these guys have experience in building things like this.
Much like Electroplankton, in Songbirds you interact with three different environments that all are capable of creating different melodies. If you're not a musical person, it's easy to look at games like this and think, "What's the big deal?" However, it always seems like people from musical backgrounds are able to create really awesome stuff inside of games like this. And heck, even if all you do is diddle around in it, there's definitely a niche for these zen game experiences on the App Store.
