Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for May 26th, 2021. In today’s article, we’ve got a few pieces of news to go through before we get into the new releases. There are only a handful of new releases today, but a couple of them are at least worth thinking about. We round things out with the usual lists of incoming and outgoing sales, and the latter of the two is quite the big-pants batch of text today, friends. Let’s get to it!
The Latest ‘NES Switch Online’ and ‘Super NES Switch Online’ Games are Now Available
As announced last week, today saw the release of the latest batch of retro games for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers. Simply update the apps to get access to the new games, as usual. The NES Switch Online app gets a single new title, Jaleco’s Ninja JaJaMaru-kun. The Super NES Switch Online app welcomes four new games. From Data East, there’s Joe & Mac: Caveman Ninja and Magical Drop 2. Culture Brain contributes its surprisingly fun Super Baseball Simulator 1.000, while Natsume offers up the fantastic Spanky’s Quest. All quite good games, and it’s likely there’s at least one in that bunch you haven’t played.
‘Disgaea 6: Defiance of Destiny’ Gets eShop Demo, New Trailer
It’s almost June, you realize. That means the year is nearly half over, and for Switch owners it means a lot of cool games are incoming. Disgaea 6: Defiance of Destiny is one such game, scheduled to hit the West on June 29th. If you want to get a taste of the strategy-RPG ahead of time, a demo is now available on the eShop. NIS America likes it so much they made a trailer to go with it. Like most other modern demos, your save progress will carry over to the full game. You can also now pre-purchase the game, and you’ll get a 10% discount if you already own Disgaea 1, Disgaea 4 Complete+, Disgaea 5 Complete, Labyrinth of Refrain: Coven of Dusk, Langrisser I & II, The Alliance Alive HD Remastered, The Caligula Effect: Overdose, or either of the Trails of Cold Steel games on Switch.
Celebrate Some Birthdays in the Next ‘Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’ Event
It feels like every year is a significant anniversary for some game series or another, but 1986 was a particularly kind year for Japanese game franchises. The next Super Smash Bros. Ultimate weekend event celebrates that year with a special tournament. Games that are celebrating their 35th anniversary this year are in the spotlight, with the tournament exclusively featuring characters, items, and stages from those franchises. So what are they? Dragon Quest, The Legend of Zelda, Metroid, Castlevania, and Kid Icarus. I’ve listed them in order of how likely I feel it is that they’ll get any acknowledgement of this milestone from their publishers outside of this event. Weep for Pit. Anyway, the event starts on Friday and runs for the usual three days.
If the recent re-release of Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance has you in the mood for an action-RPG with a more modern flavor, Aluna: Sentinel of the Shards may be of interest to you. Set in the 16th century, Aluna sees you guide the titular character as she tries to safeguard a mystical shard that is being sought out by the forces of evil. The combat looks speedy and interesting, and I rather like what I’ve seen of the setting. I’m not sure how solid its RPG chops are, but it claims to have a lot of loot to collect and craft. Regardless of how far it leans in that particular direction, I will say that it looks like a good bit of fun. I’ll investigate this one further and let you know if it stirs my feelings one way or another.
Here’s another game making its way to the Switch after being available on Apple Arcade for a while. Mutazione describes itself as a “mutant soap opera", and sure, that works. It’s a narrative adventure that has some perfunctory gardening mechanics to keep you busy while you soak in the world and its characters. Indeed, it’s the memorable and well-crafted characters that make the game more than anything else. You really do feel like you’re part of a little community for the time the game lasts. It’s a comfy game that is certainly worth experiencing, but if you’ve got Apple Arcade it’s hard to recommend dropping twenty bucks on this version.
No, it’s not the candies. There is that one game based on the Skittles candy, but that’s not what this is. Rather, this is a Pix Arts take on the classic European lawn game that bowling was originally derived from. Lob the stick at the pins and try to knock them all down. You have to get as close to 50 points as possible without going over, adding an element of strategy to the game. The usual Pix Arts effort has been put into the look and feel, which means it won’t be winning any prizes anytime soon. There are different types of pins to choose from, and four different settings. Up to four players can join in via local multiplayer. I mean, it’s pretty poor, but at least Pix Arts hasn’t obviously ripped anyone off this time. Baby steps.

Capcom seems to be letting their games take turns going on sale of late, and this week it appears to be the Miscellaneous Grab-Bag of Awesome’s turn. Dragon’s Dogma, Okami, Onimusha: Warlords, and Shinsekai Into the Depths are all discounted to various degrees, and they’re all worth owning. The Torchlight games are also on sale, and the third game just got a nice free update. As to that outbox… there’s a lot. Bandai Namco’s AniMAY sale is drawing to a close, but there’s a bunch of other stuff in there too. Take a careful look through and make sure nothing slips through your terrible, wicked grasp.
