Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for February 23rd, 2021. In today’s article, we catch up some recent releases with a pack of Mini-Views before heading into the rather noteworthy list of new titles that hit the eShop today. We’ve got summaries of all of those games, of course. There are a few really good ones, so I hope you’ve got some extra money between last week’s releases and the ones coming later this week. Things finish up, as ever, with the incoming and outgoing sales for the day. Let’s get started!
What to say about this game? At times, it almost had me. Unfortunately, it would quickly lose me again through a bit of badly-worded dialogue, an awkward story twist, or another tiresome battle. I would say that if you liked the rather rough recipe of the previous games, you’ll find enough here to make it worth your time and money. But it is a lesser game in many respects than the previous two chapters, and comes off very much like a thing that exists to extend a brand rather than a natural progression. The story is again the strongest point, but the cinnamon to oatmeal ratio here isn’t a great one. The battle system is certainly dressed up, but rarely goes anywhere exciting. In a quieter period I might have recommended this to RPG fans willing to forgive its healthy share of flaws, but we’ve been up to our ears in great RPGs of late and I don’t expect that flood to let up anytime soon.

I had a NEOGEO Pocket Color when it was an active product. For about two weeks, anyway. Then it was discontinued and all the stock got recalled, leaving me with a tiny handful of games and no way to get more. Of those games that I had, my very favorite was SNK Vs Capcom: The Match of the Millennium. Call me basic or whatever, but I liked Capcom’s crew better than the SNK bunch, and having such a playable take on Street Fighter in handheld form was a treat. But it was more than that, as this game includes a lot of extra things to unlock and modes to play, more so than any other NGPC fighter. I’m happy to say that my memories weren’t lying in this case: this is still the flagship fighter of the system, and a must-own if you have any interest in SNK’s ill-fated handheld. It’s been given the same high-quality Code Mystics treatment here as previous releases in this line, ensuring you’ll have the best possible experience with this game.

If I gave out points for sheer weirdness, PUSS! would get a five out of five. The game dresses up a relatively simple concept with some bizarre and inventive garnish, and I’m not going to lie: I kind of dig it. The actual mechanics aren’t all that different from something like Irritating Stick or even the classic game Operation. Move the cat through the mazes, don’t venture off the path for very long, and try not to get distracted by all the things that are attempting to do just that. Moving pathways, bullets, and other obstacles make that job harder. You’ll also face off against bosses at the end of a set of stages, and they are pretty neat. It’s pretty tough and I love its strange nature, but the gameplay itself can wear thin after a while. Definitely a case of style over substance, but at least that style stands out.

QUByte is stepping up on the presentation of its chess puzzle games, as Knight’s Retreat has actual backgrounds instead of putting the playfield in some kind of abstract space. Setting that element aside, what you get here is very familiar. Each stage sees you moving your knights to designated spaces on the playfield, following chess rules for movement. Getting them where they need to go will often require moving the other pieces on the board to clear the way. When the knight moves, the previous square it occupied is destroyed. The trick is in figuring out the necessary moves to get to the goal without painting yourself into a corner. There are 80 stages in total, and should you buy into the core conceit you’ll likely enjoy playing through them all. It’s not bad, but it takes more than a bit of graphical flourish to freshen up an idea that QUByte has revisited a bit too frequently.

SwitchArcade Highlight!
Atlus does the very Atlus thing of making a story-based sequel to one of its hits in a different genre with Persona 5 Strikers. The genre shift in this question is the perhaps overly-familiar Warriors-style strategic action seen in games like Dynasty Warriors, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, One Piece Pirate Warriors, and about a million other games. If you don’t like this kind of game, I can’t imagine this game will satisfy you unless you are a very big Persona 5 fan. But that’s how it always is with this sort of thing, so I’m not giving you any news there. I think this game does a nice job of being faithful to the property in question, and as a Warriors game it’s highly enjoyable.
SwitchArcade Highlight!
This is a roguelite that wears its love for The Legend of Zelda on its sleeve. Sometimes it’s a little over the top in its references, but for the most part it’s all in fun and works well. Impressively, you can play this one online with other players, with up to four people able to join in at once. Delve into four different dungeons, battle enemies, score loot, and do some light puzzle solving as you try to defeat the Titans who lay within. Since the dungeons are procedurally generated, you can conceivably play through this one again and again. It’s quite fun, especially if you team up with others. I really like how the hub area just keeps on developing and growing as you play. It keeps you hooked in nicely.

Maybe you’re looking for something a little darker and single-player focused in a roguelite dungeon crawler today, though. If that’s the case, you’ll want to give Curse of the Dead Gods a go. From the extremely cool visual style to the highly satisfying action-based combat, this game really hits a lot of high notes. The chief gimmick involves corruption, which you can encourage or try to ignore. The curses conveyed by corruption can benefit you just as much as they harm you, so you have to weigh the results based on your play style. Throw in a healthy variety of weapons and enemies to fight, and you have a rather excellent take on a well-trodden genre.
This is a point-and-click style adventure game that relies heavily on its humor to carry players through its many puzzles. Said puzzles are decent enough, but the sense of humor is going to vary from person to person. Unfortunately, it’s such a big part of the game that if it doesn’t work for you, the entire game is going to fall flat. If it does… well, you’ll find a decent if not particularly fantastic adventure game that calls a past era to mind. As the title says, you get the full season (four episodes) here with your purchase price. You can grab all of them on the App Store for a total of eight bucks, if you don’t mind playing on your mobile device. Heck, even if you’re ultimately hoping to play on your Switch, you can grab the first episode for a couple of bucks on there to see how well you like the general feel before dropping the full fifteen.
Oh boy, Pix Arts. You control a tube that is supposed to be a nanobot. You need to run over the blue ghosts who have totally never heard of Pac-Man in their un-lives, and avoid hitting the terrible-looking dinosaurs. Unless the dinosaurs have been infected by a ghost, in which case you can roll over them guilt-free. Ghosts can pick up power-ups, and so can dinosaurs. You can’t, by the looks of things. Apparently there are 250 levels of this. I’ll give Pix Arts this much: at least in terms of the gameplay design, this isn’t obviously copied from another game. For this publisher, that’s a win.
Hey hey hey, are you ready to make some… chaos money? Here we go! Okay, so here’s the deal: imagine Crazy Taxi 2, but not quite as well-built or silly. Now strip out the licensed soundtrack and replace it with some forgettable tunes. File off the serial numbers just enough, and you’ve got Taxi Chaos. This one comes from the people behind such titles as Speed 3: Grand Prix and Super Street: Racer, and it feels like it. This is probably the best game they’ve put out, for whatever that’s worth. It tries its hardest to follow SEGA’s formula and enough of it makes it through the process that what comes out the other end isn’t totally without merit. Until SEGA gets around to bringing out a few of its post-Genesis hits on Switch, this may be the closest you can get to Crazy Taxi on the platform. How unfortunate.
Another low-budget racing game for the Switch. As the name suggests, this one focuses on drifting around corners on the ten included twisty tracks. There are fourteen different cars to race with, and you can customize them as you go along. Rather surprisingly, the game includes a multiplayer mode where up to four players can race with each other online. You don’t usually see that feature in games at this price point, but there you go. Is that enough to entice you? I’ll leave that one for you to think about.

It’s a rather small list of new sales today, but there are a few things at least worth considering. Depending on your sensibilities you may enjoy Lumo and Cecconoid, which both aim to imitate a particular era of gaming and are worth taking a punt on now that they have 90% off discounts. Death Ray Manta SE is also in that “impulse buy" range if you’re on the hunt for another stylish arcade-style game. There’s plenty in the outbox, with Idea Factory’s games being the ones least likely to be on sale again soon. As always, double-check the list and see if there’s anything you really want.

There are fourteen different cars to race with, and you can customize them as you go along. Rather surprisingly, the game includes a multiplayer mode where up to four players can race with each other online. You don’t usually see that feature in games at this price point, but there you go. Is that enough to entice you? I’ll leave that one for you to think about.

Depending on your sensibilities you may enjoy Lumo and Cecconoid, which both aim to imitate a particular era of gaming and are worth taking a punt on now that they have 90% off discounts. Death Ray Manta SE is also in that “impulse buy" range if you’re on the hunt for another stylish arcade-style game. There’s plenty in the outbox, with Idea Factory’s games being the ones least likely to be on sale again soon. As always, double-check the list and see if there’s anything you really want.
