If there was ever a fundamental divide between Twitter’s leadership and its users, it was only ever going to be about an edit button. Twitter has, for most of its life, been against the ability for users to amend tweets after they were published, preferring that users delete and re-write. Naturally, users were never much of a fan of that given that deleting a tweet breaks so many of the site’s features. But, today, Twitter has announced that it will indeed be rolling out an edit button to its hundreds of millions of users.
As reports, it marks the most fundamental shift in how the platform works since it doubled the character limit from 140 characters to 280. The company says that it hopes the edit button will make Tweeting a little easier, and reduce some of the anxieties around sending one of those infamous missives. Unfortunately, there is something of a catch — the edit button, which is currently being tested internally, will only roll out to users who pay for Twitter Blue, the platform’s subscription service. Yeah.
