players, how are you getting on in the Palace Crypts? Exploring alone, or with friends in local co-op?

There are many hidden surprises in the game, which we hope players will delight in discovering for themselves, but if you’re having a tough time of it all, here are some hints and tips to help you to delve deeper into the Crypts.

1. Collect everything

Yes, really! Don’t leave a room until you have grabbed every possible item (unless you’re totally out of time).

Coins can be spent in arcade rooms and shops, weapons can be taken through to the next room, and even the smallest scoring pickups will help increase your XP level, allowing for more health and greater powers!

2. ‘100×8’ item chaining isn’t just for high scores

Got the hang of clearing a few rooms of enemies? Okay! Next, you need to learn to chain-collect food pickups dropped by enemies. Doing so will generate ability upgrade pickups (Speed, Damage, Fire Rate, and Duration).

A) Destroy enemies and they may drop food pickups (the drop frequency differs per enemy type).

B) Chain-collect those food pickups to increase their score value, up to the maximum `100×8`. Keep the `100×8` chaining going to trigger drops of ability upgrades – invaluable for defeating all those bosses you’ll encounter!

Collecting non-food pickups (such as coins and treasures) will keep that chain timer going, so don’t neglect those either! Plan your path around a room strategically so there are always some pickups close at hand.

3. Plan your route

Every floor is a branching system of rooms. Choose carefully; the different rooms each have their pros and cons.

For example, arcades give you the chance to win coins and health, while shops offer up useful rare items – but they both lack enemies and the other items found in regular rooms. They can appear to be the easy choice, but easy choices may come back to haunt you later.

4. Magic scrolls

These can be found in special room types such as Catacombs and Graveyards. You can only hold one scroll at a time, and each has a different power/effect (look in the ledger to see what they do!). They can be extremely powerful, but they’re rare; try to resist using them until you are in real trouble.

5. Boss variations

Just like the floor layouts and rooms, some bosses also have randomised variations. So stay alert when you reach a floor’s end – each will require different tactics to be defeated!

6. Prioritise enemies

Some enemies are more dangerous than others and should be eliminated as quickly as possible.

Rail turrets, blue plants, and warlocks are good examples – clear them out fast and it becomes easier to concentrate on chaining the food drops from remaining enemies.

7. Think fast, decide quickly

On first entering a room, you may need to think fast to try and spot the safest areas and routes.
Look for walls that block enemy bullets. Lava pits blocking walking enemies. Note the locations of health or weapons, calculate the safest path to them, and watch out for those bats! These quick decisions can make a huge difference later on, so stay on your toes!

8. Work together

When playing with friends, it’s important to work together! Decide who’s doing what (that includes SHARING!), and take advantage of your combined firepower to cut through your foes.

9. Read the ledger

The in-game ledger is a mine of extremely useful information. Every mysterious item and hint book collected will appear there along with a (normally) useful description.

To fully understand the secrets of the game, don’t delay and head to the ledger now – KNOWLEDGE IS POWER! The more you learn the further you will progress into the Crypts!
