Audirvāna Studio

A subscription hi-fi player that sends a local library and a few streaming catalogs to a DAC or network renderer, instead of leaving playback to the Music app's mixer.

One library, then the queue
Add folders on the internal drive, an external disk, or a NAS. Studio indexes the publisher's format list, including FLAC, ALAC, AIFF, WAV, DSF, DFF, and MQA, and it skips DRM-protected Apple Music files such as .m4p. In Streaming settings you connect Qobuz, TIDAL, Presto Music, or HRA Streaming; those catalogs stay on accounts you pay for separately. Search, favorites, and playlists can mix files with streams.

You build a queue from that view. Internet radio and podcasts are part of the same Studio library. The free Remote app browses and changes volume from a phone, but decoding and output stay on the Mac.

What the DAC actually receives
Choose a USB DAC, a UPnP/DLNA renderer, or Chromecast from the device list. On macOS, exclusive access with integer mode is the publisher's bypass of the Core Audio mixer, so other apps do not resample the stream. Settings stick to the device: a headphone DAC and a living-room renderer keep separate chains. Upsampling, a 10-band parametric EQ, convolution, crossfeed, and balance with gain and delay are optional. Leave them off for the short path. Software volume, replay gain, or any of those stages means the output is no longer bit-perfect. Audio Scan checks whether a file's content matches its stated resolution; the trial allows 30 scans.

Core Audio cannot send raw DSD to a USB DAC, so DSD leaves as DSD over PCM (DoP) unless the target is a UPnP device that plays DSD natively. Exclusive mode also claims that device until you stop.

Independent rooms, and the bill
Studio 3.4.0 is the build that adds multizone: different music on several outputs at once, each with its own device, queue, and settings. You switch the zone from the transport bar, and Remote can target one too. The product page allows up to eight zones, requires at least four CPU cores, and states there is no multiroom synchronization. Rooms play independently; they do not share a clock. Use it for a study and a living room that want different albums. Skip it when every speaker should play one stream together, or when Music already covers an Apple Music library and you have no DAC in the path.

The license is a subscription from the publisher's site, not the Mac App Store. The price page lists Studio Classic at €6.99 a month and Studio Access at €69.99 a year; tax and currency change the total. A 30-day trial needs an account and no card, and it does not charge at the end. The Mac app needs macOS 10.15 or later, 4 GB of RAM (8 GB recommended), and runs natively on Apple Silicon. Local-only listening with a perpetual license is the Origin product; streaming is why Studio exists. On macOS 26, Music Integrated mode remains unavailable according to the publisher's Mac release notes.

✅ PROS
[*]Exclusive integer-mode playback on macOS bypasses the system mixer so a USB DAC can keep the file's rate when processing stays off.
[*]Local folders and Qobuz, TIDAL, Presto Music, or HRA Streaming share one search and can sit in the same playlist.
[*]Processing settings are remembered per audio device, so a headphone chain and a network renderer do not inherit each other's EQ or upsampling.
[*]Multizone gives each output its own queue, which lets two rooms play different albums from one Mac.
[*]The 30-day trial does not require a payment method and does not bill you when it expires.
[*]A native Apple Silicon build plus UPnP/DLNA and Chromecast covers both a desk DAC and a renderer on the network.
❌ CONS
[*]Studio is a subscription, so playback rights end when the plan does, and the price page lists €6.99 a month or €69.99 a year, with tax and currency changing the total.
[*]Streaming catalogs need their own Qobuz, TIDAL, Presto, or HRA accounts, and DRM Apple Music files are not imported.
[*]macOS cannot send native DSD over USB, so a DAC receives DoP unless you target a DSD-capable UPnP renderer.
[*]Multizone does not lock rooms to one timeline, needs at least four CPU cores, and stops at eight zones.
[*]Exclusive mode silences other apps on that device, and EQ, upsampling, or convolution means the stream is no longer bit-perfect.
[*]The download requires macOS 10.15 or later and is not sold on the Mac App Store; on macOS 26, Music Integrated mode is documented as unavailable.
✅ What's New in 3.4.0 Show details
[*][Multizone] - Plays different music on several audio devices at once, each with its own queue and settings, switched from the transport bar and controllable from the remote app, on a CPU with at least four cores.
[*][Synced lyrics] - Lyrics follow the music, a click on a line jumps to that moment, and karaoke mode shows larger text that fills in as the words are sung.
[*][Content badges] - Tracks and albums can show E and AI badges, with the AI mark limited to TIDAL, and each streaming service's settings can hide them.
[*][UPnP renderer] - Control apps such as BubbleUPnP find the player more reliably, it recovers after a network change, each zone appears as its own renderer, and the player indicates when another app is playing through it.
[*][Internet radio] - Unpausing a station resumes the live stream, PLS and M3U station URLs play, a station can be added by URL, and HLS stations such as France Musique play again.
[*][NAS scans] - A short network drop, an unreadable folder, or a looping folder on a NAS no longer removes tracks from the library.
[*][Album credits] - Credits appear as a table, and clicking an artist name opens that artist.
[*][Booklets] - A booklet that cannot be opened shows a message instead of an endless spinner.
[*][Languages] - Adds Italian, Polish, and Brazilian Portuguese.
[*][Stability] - Updates bundled libraries, hardens file and network handling, and includes many crash fixes.
