India is a secular country. Secularism in this country means that individuals are provided with the opportunity to follow the religion of their choice. Religions provide information in terms of various aspects, which are helpful in strengthening secularism.
Communalism – Obstacle in Development
Communalism is an ideology, which says that the society is divided into religious communities. It means that in some cases, individuals differ from each other in terms of outlook.
Individuals have feelings of hostility and hatred towards people of other communities and religions and this is often seen in India, which is called communalism. These negative feelings sometimes emerge in a big form and individuals indulge in various types of crimes and violent acts, such as verbal abuse, physical assault, theft and robbery, serious injury, burning shops of weak and helpless persons and insulting women.
I have seen that there is hatred between people of different communities without any reason. Nowadays, even 5-6 year old children have hatred just because they belong to a particular community.
Communalism is the opposite of secularism and I can see that communalism is weakening the basic element of our constitution, i.e. the word ‘secular’ written in the preamble. I personally feel that India is a pluralistic country and the rise in communalism and its intolerance should be a major concern for the common man.
Ways to avoid being communalist
If you feel that somewhere you are hating a particular religion then first of all think that a person of other religion is also a human being and there is no religion greater than humanity. One important aspect that needs to be kept in mind is that individuals should conduct their actions and activities ethically. So, the measures to deal with communalism are as follows:
While starting the process of eliminating communalism, people should keep some things in mind. Individuals should be well prepared in terms of various methods that will help in preventing communalism.
Individuals should increase their knowledge in terms of communalism and the political elite. This should be checked, as it leads to inaction against communal violence. In addition, covert or overt political and ideological support to communalism by the state machinery is also accepted.
The state has to implement new methods and procedures to prevent communal violence. When leaders have implemented methods and procedures to reduce communal riots, they must understand that these are being implemented in a systematic and disciplined manner.
Individuals should be well trained in terms of methods and techniques. Individuals should skillfully grasp the fact that in such cases, the incidence of communal riots is less and even absent.
Communal riots are widely harmful and cause loss of life and property. It is clearly understood that the primary goal of individuals of all communities, categories and socio-economic backgrounds is to promote welfare and harmony. It is difficult for individuals to live in communities where incidents of communal riots take place. Individuals of all communities should promote the spirit of brotherhood.
