Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for June 10th, 2022. Today is the last day of the week, and that means we have to mop up the new releases in anticipation of the weekend. We’ve got summaries of all of them, with the big one of course being Nintendo’s Mario Strikers: Battle League. There is also a terrifyingly huge list of new sales, and even my heavily curated list is a little on the bananas side of things. Well, let’s get to it.

New Releases

Mario Strikers: Battle League ($59.99)

SwitchArcade Highlight!

After a pretty long break, the Mario Strikers series is back. I haven’t had a chance to play this one yet, but the reviews have been very strong. Like other Mario sports games on Switch, it seems as though it’s a bit light on content at launch, but the gameplay is getting high praise. Hopefully I’ll be able to get my hands on this one and let you know my thoughts, but we’ll have to see how things go. At the very least, fans of the previous Strikers games should feel comfortable wading in.

Metal Max Xeno Reborn ($39.99)

metalmaxxenoreborn.jpg

A reimagined version of 2018’s Metal Max Xeno, Metal Max Xeno Reborn builds significantly on that game’s base and feels like a completely different experience as a result. It’s still a free-roaming action RPG of sorts, never truly committing to either half of that genre as much as it probably should. You have a lot of options for customizing your characters as you go along, and you’ll need to think carefully about what you’re building towards because the bosses can really have some punch. As you can see from the price, this is a bit of a budget game and it assuredly feels like it in some ways. But there’s more good than bad here, and it is a rather unique experience.

Ampersat ($9.99)

ampersat.jpg

The at-mark used to be such a big wheel in the roguelike space. The hero of all the biggest games. But now the genre is popular, and they all have fancy graphics. No one needs at-mark anymore. But at-mark has at least one more adventure ahead of it in this roguelite action-RPG. Go through more than fifty hand-built levels, battle monsters and bosses, find loot, upgrade your character, and fill out your skill tree. Once you’ve cleared all the levels, you can keep the fun rolling in an endless, procedurally-generated area. I wouldn’t say it’s a spectacular game, but it’s an amusing enough way to pass some time if you’re that-way inclined.

Pro Gymnast Simulator ($19.99)

progymnastsimulator.jpg

This one looks like it could be really fun. It seems to have gotten a warm reception when it released on computers, too. It’s basically a combination of gymnastics, parkour, and a Ninja Warrior-style obstacle course with semi-realistic physics. Make your way through the courses and try to put together cool-looking combos along the way. You have full control over your gymnast’s body, and that does mean there’s a bit of learning curve here. It also means you can get some pretty hilarious mess-ups going.

The Wizard and The Slug ($4.99)

thewizardandtheslug.jpg

At last, some real five-dollar Switch platformer food. Play as a very nimble little slug who teams up with an outcast wizard who will support you using magic. This one is from the same developer as the excellent Super Mega Zero, so if you like platformers I feel pretty confident you’ll have a fine time here. Just beware, it’s very try-hard with its comedy. You may take to it and find it hilarious, or it may turn you off and just annoy you. But the gameplay? The gameplay is solid no matter where your sense of humor lies.

Mysteries Under Lake Ophelia ($5.49)

mysteriesunderlakeophelia.jpg

You remember back in the PlayStation 1 days how you would sometimes come across a game at the video rental shop or in the used section of Gamestop that you had never heard of before, and it turned out to be some sort of weird, quirky delight? That’s this. It even kind of looks like a PlayStation 1 game. This is primarily a fishing game where you can catch over thirty different types of fish and make food with them. But the mysteries referred to in the title do eventually surface, adding a light horror element to the whole affair. If you’re looking for something unusual to play today, this might be your ticket.

Freshly Frosted ($9.99)

freshlyfrosted.jpg

Hmm. This one is interesting. It’s a puzzle game with twelve dozen levels to play, and the idea is that you need to build conveyor belts to get the donuts from the entrances to the delivery doors, stopping at all the necessary frosting and sprinkle stations along the way. That process gets a lot more complicated as you go along, with a relaxed pace early on that eventually turns into a series of tricky mental knots. Not the most difficult of puzzle games, but challenging enough. If you like how the premise sounds, you’ll probably like the game itself.

Jewel Match ($2.99)

jewelmatch.jpg

Been a while since the last trashy Benjamin Kistler template flip, but he’s still lingering about the eShop like a bad odor. This one is a Tsum Tsum-ish puzzle game where you’re matching pieces in a continuous line to try to make a jewel drop. You get fifty stages, and you can only play in handheld mode due to required touch controls. Lazy Android template flips are like that sometimes.

Steam Engine ($0.99)

steamengine.jpg

Cow-clicker, tapper, incremental game, whatever you want to call that genre, that’s what Steam Engine is. Tap the button to get money, use the money to buy things that will help you earn more money more quickly, repeat until you finish building your steam engine. There are a couple of twists here but by and large it’s exactly what it looks like. Worth a buck? I leave that to you to answer.

Sales

(North American eShop, US Prices)

There is a metric ton of stuff on sale right now, and consider the technical weight of digital objects that is a very big number of games indeed. I’ve heavily curated the list, mostly including very notable games that don’t go on sale often or games that are at new low prices. And yes, that is still the list we ended up with. Hm. Well, don’t miss Infernax. For everything else… I leave these lists to you.

That’s all for today and this week, friends. We’ll be back next week with more new releases, including the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles title from Dotemu. Will there be a Nintendo Direct? Timing and scuttlebutt seem to support it, but I suppose we’ll have to wait and see. There will also be reviews, more sales, and almost certainly some news. I hope you all have a great weekend, and as always, thanks for reading!
